Procedures for dealing with Academic Malpractice

The University uses electronic systems for the purposes of detecting plagiarism and other forms of academic malpractice and for marking. Such systems include TurnitinUK, the plagiarism detection service used by the University.

As part of the formative and/or summative assessment process, you may be asked to submit electronic versions of your work to TurnitinUK and/or other electronic systems used by the University (this requirement may be in addition to a requirement to submit a paper copy of your work). If you are asked to do this, you must do so within the required timescales.

The School also reserves the right to submit work handed in by you for formative or summative assessment to TurnitinUK and/or other electronic systems used by the University.

Please note that when work is submitted to the relevant electronic systems, it may be copied and then stored in a database to allow appropriate checks to be made.

Dealing with a case of suspected malpractice, including plagiarism, always starts at School level in the first instance but may proceed to Faculty or University level depending on the year of the student. Years 1and 2, where it is the first offence is handled within the School, second offence by Faculty; Final Year where it is the first offence is handled by Faculty; second offence by the University’s Student Disciplinary Committee.

The School has an appointed Academic Malpractice Officer whose role it is to oversee the detection of malpractice and to handle all cases of suspected malpractice.

University guidelines will be followed for all cases of suspected plagiarism involving students submitting assignments for Alliance MBS courses. The University’s document “Academic Malpractice:Procedure on the Handling of Cases” maybe found via the attached link

Academic malpractice: Guidance on the handling of cases

Where plagiarism is suspected in relation to a course offered by another School in the University, then that School will investigate the plagiarism in line with University procedures stated above.
